Amorphous silica between confining walls and under shear : a computer simulation study

چکیده

Molecular dynamics computer simulations are used to investigate a silica melt confined between walls at equilibrium and in a steady–state Poisseuille flow. The walls consist of point particles forming a rigid face–centered cubic lattice and the interaction of the walls with the melt atoms is modelled such that the wall particles have only a weak bonding to those in the melt, i.e. much weaker than the covalent bonding of a Si–O unit. We observe a pronounced layering of the melt near the walls. This layering, as seen in the total density profile, has a very irregular character which can be attributed to a preferred orientational ordering of SiO4 tetrahedra near the wall. On intermediate length scales, the structure of the melt at the walls can be well distinguished from that of the bulk by means of the ring size distribution. Whereas essentially no structural changes occur in the bulk under the influence of the shear fields considered, strong structural rearrangements in the ring size distribution are present at the walls as far as there is a slip motion. For the sheared system, parabolic velocity profiles are found in the bulk region as expected from hydrodynamics and the values for the shear viscosity as extracted from those profiles are in good agreement with those obtained in pure bulk simulations from the appropriate Green–Kubo formula.

Amorphous silica at surfaces and interfaces: simulation studies

The structure of surfaces and interfaces of silica (SiO2) is investigated by large scale molecular dynamics computer simulations. In the case of a free silica surface, the results of a classical molecular dynamics simulation are compared to those of an ab initio method, the Car–Parrinello molecular dynamics. This comparative study allows to check the accuracy of the model potential that underli...

Reducing the Forces Caused by Earthquake on Retaining Walls Using Granulated Rubber-Soil Mixture

In recent years, various studies have been undertaken on how to use waste materials in civil engineering projects. Among waste materials, waste rubber has been highlighted to be used for different purposes such as reinforcing of soil and making of reinforced slopes. To investigate the properties of granulated rubber-soil mixture and its application in making of slopes behind retaining walls, so...

Shear-induced structural changes of a smectic-A phase: a computer simulation study.

We have carried out a Monte Carlo simulation of a thin sample of the smectic-A phase of the Gay-Berne mesogen GB(4.4,20.0,1,1) sandwiched between two plates and subject to shear. The smectic layers are perpendicular to the confining plates and are pinned at the boundaries. The thickness of the samples studied ranges from about three to twenty molecules. The layers tilt progressively with increa...

Non-Linear Behavior and Shear Strength of Diagonally Stiffened Steel Plate Shear Walls

In this study, non-linear behavior of diagonally stiffened steel plate shear walls as a seismic resisting system has been investigated, and theoretical formulas for estimating shear strength capacity of the system have been proposed. Several validated analytical finite element models of steel shear walls with various stiffener dimensions are generated to verify and compare the analytical and th...

Simulation of shear bands using polygonal particles

The choice of particle shape representation is critical in the accuracy of the simulations of real granular materials. Here we present a method to simulate particle shape using polygonal particles. The method reproduces shear bands using different boundary conditions: confining walls, floppy boundaries and periodic boundary conditions.
